A lot of video games that were supposed to release this year were delayed as Covid-19 impacted development studios in one way or another. But despite that, there were some exciting titles that hit the markets in 2021 and brought new levels of entertainment for players across the globe.
Here’s a list of games, in no particular order that we think are the best of 2021 (so far).

Resident Evil Village
Capcom’s survival horror title was released on May 7, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia. It was one of the most anticipated titles of this year and with a new narrative, new bosses, and an eerie environment, RE Village became an instant hit among players. The game is said to have the biggest RE launch in Steam and Twitch history. RE Village also had a multiplayer component called RE: Verse that was supposed to launch with RE Village but it was delayed to 2022.
PC exclusive survival game Valheim was released on February 2, 2021. Players can either jump into a single-player mode to run through the game’s narrative or party with their friends for some co-op action. Valheim’s open-world offers tons of resources that can be used to make tools necessary for survival. Players can craft weapons, build ships, armors, and shelters in Valheim.
Hitman 3 is the final title of the World of Assassination trilogy. Players travel to new locations in the game to carry out assassination contracts. Hitman 3 features the Seven Deadly Sins DLC which contains various ‘Acts’ that bring new content to the game. Currently, Hitman 3 is running Act 4 Season of Lust and it has brought new contracts and elusive targets for players to try. Hitman 3 was released on January 20, 2021, for Windows, Switch, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
Returnal is PlayStation 5 exclusive that was released on April 30, 2021. The game takes place in a sci-fi setting where the protagonist is stuck in a time loop. Returnal takes complete advantage of PS5’s hardware to deliver an immersive gameplay experience. There was an issue where save files were corrupted, but developer Housemarque quickly addressed the problem through a patch. The game is quite popular having sold over 500k copies worldwide.
Monster Hunter Rise
Monster Hunter Rise was released on March 26, 2021, and is available only on Nintendo Switch. A PC version of the game is scheduled to release next year. This game is one of Capcom’s biggest revenue-generating titles having sold over 6 million copies since launch. Monster Hunter Rise is an action RPG with monsters, weapons, engaging stories, and an open world.
It Takes Two
It Takes Two does not have a single-player option but it nevertheless, successfully enticed a massive player base. This two-player co-op game was released on March 26, 2021, for Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It Takes Two features platformer elements and challenging gameplay where players have to coordinate with each other to progress ahead.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is another PS5 exclusive that launched this year. Like previous Ratchet and Clank titles, this game too features platformer and shooter elements. Players can use various weapons, skills, and gadgets to eliminate different enemies throughout the game. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is one of the best-selling PS5 games and has sold over a million copies so far.
Outriders launched on April 1 this year and it boasts a massive player base. Outriders is an action RPG that gives players a choice to pick one of the four available classes, and an arsenal of weapons for combat. Outriders is applauded for its gameplay and visuals but its narrative lacks depth.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is an action RPG that was released on May 14, 2021, for PS4, PC, and Xbox One. The game features content from all three Mass Effect titles. The game offers choices for players that have a direct impact on the game’s narrative. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition features optimized graphics and improved technical features.
Battlegrounds Mobile India
Available only in India, BGMI is perhaps the most popular mobile game in the country. Krafton launched the game on July 2, 2021, for Android and within a week of launch, BGMI registered 34 million players. BGMI’s competitive scene is also growing rapidly. Krafton is organizing tournaments with massive prize pools and teams are picking players up to compete in these tournaments.
