Sony has released the highly awaited PlayStation system software update for the month of September. The update includes new additions to PlayStation 5 consoles across the globe, slight enhancements to PlayStation 4 consoles, and improvements to the PlayStation and PlayStation Now apps on Android and iOS mobile phones.
The star of the show here is the PlayStation 5 console update. It adds a host of new features fine tuned for the console such as support for 3D Audio with TVs, advanced sound output control, an enriched PlayStation UX , the ability to use the M.2 SSD expansion slot and a new social rank in the ‘Accolades’ system.
PlayStation 5 Console Updates
M.2 SSD Expansion
The M.2 SSD slot is finally viable as Sony has added the option to simply install an SSD and play your PS5 or PS4 games off of it. The storage drive can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps.
Console owners can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options. If the SSD meets requirements, users can play games with the same experience that the inbuilt SSD offers. Sony has stated that the SSD should also have a heatsink which will allow for better heat dissipation.
Here are the PS5 storage expansion SSD requirements:
- Interface: PCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M)
- Storage: 250 GB-4 TB
- Supported Sizes: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110 [Length of your SSD]
- Sequential read speed: 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended
UI/UX Changes to PS5 consoles
The PlayStation 5 console update brings PS5 user experience tuning along with it. Users can now easily manage their control center experience, chat with friends, and more clearly get information from the main games page.
This is achieved by letting the player customize the options to show on the control center and even the order they show up in. Furthermore, with the enhanced game base, players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center.
A highly useful quality of life improvement along with the PlayStation 5 console update comes in labelling games. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of a game installed, they’ll now appear in the “Installed” tab of the Game Library and on the Home screen. Each game’s tile now also clearly indicates its platform.
Better Social and Gaming Experience
Sony has now added a few new things to the ‘Accolades’ social ranking system. Accolades are a way to embody friendly players on the PlayStation base. The new earnable title is ‘Leader’, which requires you to call the shots in online games.
Players that love capturing their personal best moments in games for posterity will love the all new Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. With the PlayStation 5 console update, when players score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. The clip can be directly shared with friends and view them above challenge cards. There’s a new trophy tracker too, which lets players see more trophies at once from the game space.
3D Audio for TV Speakers
At launch, the software was missing support for 3D Audio on TV speakers. This update adds that, letting users customize the sound, the area of effect, and even set the size of the room, which will allow the console to optimize sound best suited for your set-up.
Players who use Sony’s Pulse 3D headphones, will now get an Equalizer to play around with. This can be used to further fine tune the gaming experience. Users can manually set and save presets, which is quite a nifty feature that fans were looking for since the beginning.
PS4 Console Enhancements
With this update, players can view their PS5 trophies on their PS4 profile and Trophy list. Players can also view other players’ PS5 trophies on PS4. On both PS4 and PS5 consoles, Party owners now have the ability to disband a Party without having to remove players individually.
