Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the acquisition of Housemarque, the Finnish video game developer behind the PS5 exclusive title Returnal. This acquisition comes after Returnal proved to be a commercial success for both parties. Before Returnal, Housemarque was known for the Super Stardust video game series.
Sharing his thoughts on the acquisition, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst said “Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community. This addition enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque.”
Returnal is a shooter game that launched in April 2021. Being a PlayStation 5 exclusive, the game makes full use of the next-generation console hardware and delivers an immersive gameplay experience by using the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback features of PS5’s DualSense wireless controllers.
Ilari Kuittinen, Co-founder and Managing Director, Housemarque said “We are so excited to finally join the PlayStation Studios family! This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay-centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern artform.”
More console exclusive titles on the way?
Sony’s acquisition of Housemarque comes after their rival Microsoft bought Bethesda Softworks. Both of these companies may now try to roll out console exclusive titles for the growth of their user base.
