Finnish video game development company Housemarque has heard its community’s concerns over save points or other save options in their latest game for the PlayStation 5, Returnal. The developers acknowledged the players’ want of a save option in the game, but neither confirmed nor denied the addition of such a feature in the game in future updates.
Returnal is the latest game for the PS5 and the game combines elements of roguelikes and bullet-hell games with third person shooter action and a hardcore focus on gameplay. Since the game has roguelike elements, each time you die in the game, you have to start from zero, in a newly generated, but similar to the previous world. Owing to this, the game can be rather punishing, which is why many in the community have asked for an option to save the game.

The game is also considered, among several circles, to be quite hard, meaning you will surely die a lot, at least at the start. In such a case not being able to save your game sounds devastating. Incidentally, when you start a ‘Run’ (playing till you die), you get locked out of the PS5, making it near impossible to switch over to something else while you’re going on with a playthrough. The game recommends putting the PS5 in rest mode, with the game running. However, that isn’t ideal either, seeing as how PS5s just crash out of nowhere in rest mode.
However, not having a save point, or any other save mechanic in the game results in a very unique kind of playthrough. You plan each move, and get absolutely beefed up for the upcoming boss. You start to manage things better and make crucial in-game decisions, because you can’t just save the game and restart whenever you want to. The developers, on the community’s cry for a save method say “We hear the community and we love you all. Nothing to announce now, but keep playing and enjoying the challenge as you can!” in their latest tweet.
