PlayStation 5 M.2 SSD slot is now accessible
With this update, users can connect any PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD on their PS5 console to get more storage to work around. Sony recommends using SSD’s with a sequential reading speed of 5,500MB/s or faster but also warns that “Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.”
PlayStation 5 users should review the drive specifications before making a purchase. “SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products,” the company said.
In the FAQ’s, Sony notes that-
- PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.
- PS5 games can be downloaded directly to M.2 SSD storage.
- PS5 games can be updated on M.2 SSD storage.
Back in April, Sony released an update to bring USB extended storage for the PS4 and PS5. Users were able to copy their games from the console’s internal storage to the external USB storage device, but they were not allowed to play games directly from the USB storage, nor were they allowed to download games from the PlayStation Store on the USB storage device.

3D audio support, trophy tracking, and more
PlayStation 5 is Sony’s fastest-selling console. Apart from M.2 SSD support, the company is making improvements by adding 3D audio support for TV. This feature is available in the sound menu under PS5’s system settings and it uses the DualSense controller’s microphone to measure the acoustics of your room and apply the new 3D audio settings.
This update also brings a new trophy tracker that lets players access up to five trophies per game through the control center. Players will also be able to write and view messages and manage friend requests from the Game Base control menu in the control center. Friends Tab is also updated and each game will now feature its version, whether it’s a PS4 or a PS5 version.
