The Los Gatos-based streaming giant has hired former EA and Facebook executive Mike Verdu Bloomberg reported. Former Oculus VP, Mr Verdu will be leading the game development at Netflix. Once the lone king of Streamable content, Netflix now faces a lot of competition in the domain.
With the arrival of newer platforms like Disney+ and HBO Max, people have gravitated towards the newer options due to pricing and availability. Netflix has still managed to stay ahead of the game due to its original productions and exclusives but in recent times things have started to change. Disney being one of the key players has pushed more into producing exclusive content for their platform.
Netflix has always been interested in game franchises
Disney has been licensing titles like Star Wars and Marvel Avengers to other studios for a while now. Netflix has always shown interest in the gaming industry be it adapting The Witcher series or even Dota Anime that aired a few months ago. Recently they also announced an Assassin’s creed adaptation coming to its platform. The OTT giant has also experimented with a few franchises like Resident evil with minimal success.
They plan to offer games on its platform along with the existing catalogue of programs. They plan to offer these services within a year, Verdu might be the key cog in taking this plan forward. He brings in years of experience from working on popular titles like Star Wars and The Sims at EA. The company has also put out a job requirement for a game designer to join the team.
Netflix is set to make major announcements about the project in the coming months.
