After several delays, and generating interest among a niche category of gamers, Kena Bridge of Spirits is finally out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC (Epic Store). The game has been developed by Ember Labs, a studio mainly focused on animation, which is why the game looks a lot like a Pixar movie.
For Kena Bridge of Spirits, Ember Lab took inspiration from a host of PlayStation classics such as God of War, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn and added some new twists to old school gameplay mechanics. While it draws from many games which came before it, it has a distinct visual and tonal identity to it.
Kena Bridge of Spirits is an all new magical adventure
Now that the game is out, players can freely explore the island where they must play as Kena a young spirit guide who uses her magical abilities to help deceased people move from the physical to the spirit world. Through the course of her journey, players can take in striking views, find hidden gems in nooks and crannies of this beautiful yet deadly island, which has a variety of diverse biomes.
Since Kena is a spirit guide, she must deal with nefarious souls as well, who can very often get in the way, and that’s where the combat systems come in. Kena has a magical staff, which can be made into a bow, and can be used as a melee weapon which packs deadly magical power to shoot out attacks. Not just that, the staff has a host of uses for puzzle solving and communicating with the Rot, your friendly companions on this island.
Apart from that, the game has platforming elements, which are a lot like those found in Horizon Zero Dawn, while the puzzles take inspiration from Uncharted like adventure games. Not just that, the semi-open world has various locations which players can explore freely.
