Asian Games finally has made the progress to include Esports as a competitive sports division in next year’s version of 2022. Eight gaming titles means a total of 24 medals. The upcoming year we have a very strong chance of winning medals for India in titles such as Hearthstone, FIFA, DOTA 2, League of Legends and Street Fighter.
Inclusion of Esports gaming titles in Asian Games 2022
There shall soon be a launching of Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) backed “Road to Asian Games” programme in order to identify the best talent in the field of Esports and train them for September 2022, when the main event in Hangzhou, China is scheduled to be held.
Unlike last time, this year we have enough time to have India being represented by the best of players in the Esports category at Asian Games 2022. Tirth Mehta won a bronze medal in Asian Games 2018 for the card collectable game Hearthstone during an Esports demonstration event.
We are waiting for additional inputs of competitive gaming titles such as Arena of Valor and PUBG Mobile in the Asian Games.
It’s time for our Sports Ministry to recognize ESFI and “Esports” as a full-fledged division in sports. We are confident that we will increase our medals tally this time. ESFI & AESF both are committed to develop, support and grow esports not only in India but the whole Asian region.
Mr Lokesh Suji, Director, Esports Federation of India (ESFI) & Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF).
